Director's statement

In early 2007 my friend Julie Meyer from Screenwriters Workshop asked if I would help her produce a script she had written for a contest. Her script, "Forgotten," is about a nun’s chance encounter with a troubled young woman. My first thought was, “I don’t want to tell a religious story. I’m not really a religious person.” Then, upon reading it, the authenticity of the characters hooked me--particularly how the nun doesn’t act the stereotypical way I thought nuns “should” act.

“Forgotten” comes across as a very human story, and spiritual at the same time. The story draws the characters with a refreshing frankness and sensitivity while balancing themes of judgment, understanding, mercy and compassion.
I also like how it depicts a high-minded religious devotee as human, and just as judgmental as the next person. In the end, what really made me want to make this film is the subtle story of two people overcoming misconceptions of each other, opening their hearts, and coming together despite their differences.
